Lowcountry Artists & Writers Retreat

Opening in October in the Town of Estill!

We are still hard at work on the final touches of our new artist-in-residence project, which is designed to give artists in all disciplines the opportunity to come and stay in the rural lowcountry for as long as 2 months and work in a peaceful country setting. Private living and shared studio space is provided in a welcoming atmosphere. A short video is posted at the bottom of this page to give you a feel for the type of lodging provided. Due to the private nature of the retreat, each unit can only accommodate a single artist. No family or other guests allowed.

Interested artists should note: We welcome applications from artists at all career stages and geographic locations. We primarily seek applications from visual artists (painters, sculptors, installation artists, photographers, video/new media artists, fiber artists, printmakers, etc.) and writers in all literary disciplines. We also welcome applications from dancers, actors, musicians, and other performers but ask them to take note that our 12x40 studio space at the retreat is best suited for artists who work quietly (nothing is sound-proofed) and who don't require a large amount of space for rehearsal / movement arts. We are happy to provide alternative practice space at the Palmetto Theater of the Stanley Arts Center, when available. The studios have light-duty ventilation, so an art practice generating strong fumes cannot be accommodated.

We have two residency tracks available.

The Teaching Artist residency is a competitive residency which allows  6 artists per school year to come and stay at the retreat for a period of 2-8 weeks. Teaching artists receive free lodging at the retreat, a $1000 stipend, and up to $1000 for project supplies.  A performance, exhibit, or teaching project in a Hampton or Allendale County public school is required. We have received a generous grant from the SC Arts Commission for those funds.

Submissions for the Teaching Artist residency are scored according to a rubric. Scoring is based on the quality of the artist's portfolio, the strength of the proposed project/performance for the residency, as well as on our judgment about how much this opportunity would benefit the local community, as well as the applicant and their goals. We also take equity factors into consideration when assigning points, in order to better support those who have been historically marginalized. Within the application, artists have the option to describe any equity factors the jurors should take into consideration. This may include considerations of race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, disability, status as a veteran, immigration status, overall financial hardship, and lack of access to exhibition opportunities. We recognize that racism and racial inequality pervade the cultural sector, our community, and the world at large. Our residences may not be fully accessible to those with mobility issues or other disabilities. We are happy to make reasonable accommodation. If you have any questions about how we can best support you during your stay, please reach out to us at HamptonCountyArts@gmail.com. A $50 application fee is required to apply for either residency track. If selected for a Teaching Artist residency, you will be required to provide a SLED background check, required to work in a public school.

The Community Artist residency track also allows for stays of up to 8 weeks. This is a competitive, fee-based residency with a cost of $250/week. Community Artists will have the opportunity to present their work at the Stanley Fine Art Center or the Palmetto Theater. You may be able to recoup some of the cost through ticket sales for performances or fee-based classes, contact us for more details.
